You Can Change (God’s transforming power for our sinful behaviour & negative emotions) by Tim Chester

My Thoughts (John)

When we began ministry, supporting those that were addicted, and had life controlling behaviours, in London in 2015, one of the first groups I was blessed to facilitate was a book group studying You Can Change by Tim Chester, which was first published in 2008.

Being from the U.S.A.  I was not familiar with Tim Chester, or any of his writings, so this was a first for me.  As it turned out, most of the men in the study group had heard of it, and some even had a copy, but none had really sat down and worked their way through the book, so it was a first for them also.

As I worked my way through the book in preparation for each study, I was surprised and thankful for the complete view of the Gospel that the book comprises!  I noted, highlighted, and underlined; now my copy, after years of reading and rereading has markings on almost every page.

Here is a quote from page 21:

God is in the business of change. He’s interested in making us like Jesus.  He’s restoring his image in us so that again we can know him, rule with him and reflect his glory.

Page 23;

Moral effort, fear of judgement and sets of rules can’t bring about lasting change.  But amazing things happen when we ‘turn to the Lord’.

Page 52;

But only God can bring true lasting change. And that’s because only God can change our hearts.

And it goes on and on; I could literally put a hundred quotes here.

I recommend that all new Christians read You Can Change. Also, all who have known the Lord for many years should read this book avidly with love, as it is an expression of how the Lord works in our lives, via his Holy Spirit, to remake us into His image.
