Sexual Sanity for Men (re-creating your mind in a crazy culture) by David White: A Personal Review

After arriving in London to help those with addictive and life controlling behaviours in 2015,  it became apparent that I, John, needed to begin a Men’s Sexual Issues Support group.  we bagna with addressing issues surrounding lust and pornography, but then to it grew to include those dealing with identity issues; and various forms of sexual addiction.

We do live in a crazy culture!  Our culture tells us to look inside of ourselves (our messed up selves) to find the real us and solutions; but we know we need to look to Jesus.

Men are in the thick of the battle; in a heavy crossfire, pinned down, and losing the battle far too often.

So, as I began having these men’s groups, a friend recommended I look at this book, Sexual Sanity for Men by David White.

I had read a couple of different books before on this subject when I was still in the U.S.; Every Man’s Battle was the first and it is well known; but I found it addressing men with a specific personality type, elite sports fanatics and the military, it seemed to me.  It lost me quickly.

When I began to read Sexual Sanity for Men, I was impacted by the depth of the theology within.  No macho stuff, just biblical imperatives of how we should be living our lives for our Saviour.

I have been through it so many times now it is falling apart, literally, all of the pages have broken free of the binding.

It’s another book that I have checks, highlights and stars on most of the pages.

Here are a few quotes:

Page 10;

There is a profound sense of slavery and frustration in our inability to overcome our struggle with sin.

Page 24;

But Jesus came to bring restoration to this broken world and to redeem our manhood, transforming us from men who oppress and exploit to agents of redemption, bringing healing and extending his kingdom.

All Christians live with both an official theology and a functional theology. Our official theology is the faith we publicly profess. We proclaim many things about God, and declare with the psalmist that his “steadfast love is better than life” (Psalm 63:3), but we live very differently.

In short, our official theology is what we say we believe, our functional theology is how we actually live.

One of the most incredible things the Lord revealed to me in my many times through this well written book, is that most men seek not to sin, and fail, time and time again. They may be trying to do the right thing but the motivation can be warped; they are not really seeking to obey God out of their love for Him or maybe even more significantly; His love for them. They are relying on their own strength to change rather than God’s power in their weakness. This is perhaps a subtle difference, but a vitally important change in thinking, and an evidence of the transforming power of the Holy Spirit.

Although this book is written specially for men, everyone can learn how to live a God-focused life by reading it.

David White is with Harvest U.S.A which is a ministry specifically aimed at dealing with sexual sin, in both men and women’s lives.
