Captured by a Better Vision was written by Tim Chester in 2010, following shortly after his book; You Can Change.
This book is written as if the writer is actually aware of the battle; the day by day, relentless vigil to stand firm in the hope of the Lord Jesus, against the never-ending onslaught of temptation.
Temptation, for those who have opened the door to porn, and lust, time and time again, seems insurmountable, hopeless, and unending.
They peer without hope into the gaping maw that is the vortex of entropy; that self-feeding circle of temptation, sin, guilt and shame.
For those of us who have been caught in this shameful, sinful habit, it does seem entirely hopeless.
Enter Captured by a Better Vision; here there is a glimmer of hope, through the reality of the battle, and the encouragement of the cross & resurrection.
Mark Maynell in his review for Themelios says this:
That Captured by a Better Vision is needed and timely should not be in doubt. The statistics for pornography usage and the sex industry’s profit margins are truly terrifying. Porn’s repercussions (for users, for those involved in the sex industry, and for society as a whole) bear thinking about. Its pervasive presence among Christians is the western church’s vast, unspoken secret. One survey Chester quotes suggests that out of every 100 adults, twenty-five men and ten women are struggling with regular porn use (p. 11). Yet despite its prevalence, it is a problem of such shame that it is confined to the shadows and never properly addressed.
Pornography is such a problem that the aforementioned conservative statistics pale to many statistical studies; such as 50% of men sitting in the pews on any given Sunday morning struggle with Porn! And even 50% of Pastors have
viewed pornography within the past 90 days!
Is it then any wonder that this elephant in the room is not given the preaching time it deserves?
Pornography usage among Christians is of epidemic proportions, according to a Sex Therapist I spoke with at the International Substance Abuse and Addiction Coalition Conference (ISAAC) last March.
This book is a well written work aimed at helping those of us that struggle with porn to see that our help is in the Lord Jesus.
It is less about not sinning, although that is a goal, and more about loving our Lord and Saviour Jesus, more than our sin.
The sin gives us pleasure for a decreasingly short period of time, and for an increasingly longer period of guilt & shame, as time goes on.
It becomes less and less satisfying, while becoming harder to stand against.
Captured by a Better Vision sets the stage for us to see that God has in reality, already revealed to us, exactly what we need in the daily battle, Jesus, and His never ending love.
