Week 5 Day 35: Where are you tethered?
"It is for freedom that Christ has set you free. Stand firm, then, and do not let yourselves be burdened again by a yoke of slavery."
Ponder: I was chatting with a friend this morning on What's App and she mentioned that she feels "untethered." This really provoked some pondering in me: Where is my anchor in life? What or who is holding me together? Who or what am I tethering my life to? Listen to these verses from Hebrews 6: 17-20 from the Message.
"When God wanted to guarantee his promises, he gave his word, a rock-solid guarantee—God can’t break his word. And because his word cannot change, the promise is likewise unchangeable.
18-20 We who have run for our very lives to God have every reason to grab the promised hope with both hands and never let go. It’s an unbreakable spiritual lifeline, reaching past all appearances right to the very presence of God where Jesus, running on ahead of us, has taken up his permanent post as high priest for us, in the order of Melchizedek."
Action: When we are little we literally believe and lap up all that is said to us, we internalise it and it is only later that we can accept or throw out what is said to us. Sometimes this is very painful and can impact our relationship with others and God because we sometimes automatically live out of the lies we have believed. We become "tethered" to those lies. Ask God to show you what lies and what good things you have internalised throughout your life. Match these with what God has written in His Word. You may need some help to do this. For example: do you find yourself just feeling really sad and totally broken after someone says something against you? Yes, this is always hard, but are you taking it to extremes? Is it triggering you? Are you more tethered to what other people say about you? or the feeling of rejection? Are you able to just bring this hurt to God, speak truth to your soul and move on. Or is this just too difficult.
Prayer: Lord, I want to live in truth, in You. I do not want to live out of what other people say or believe about me any longer. Please heal the hurtful things spoken against me in the past. Help me forgive and move on. I do not want to be tethered to the rejection hurts of the past or lies anymore.
Challenge: Make up your mind to believe and practice thinking about what God says about you. Make the choice to be tethered to your Abba, Father not what people say about you or the lies you have internalised. Listen to what Paul wrote in Romans 8: 39: "I’m absolutely convinced that nothing—nothing living or dead, angelic or demonic, today or tomorrow, high or low, thinkable or unthinkable—absolutely nothing can get between us and God’s love because of the way that Jesus our Master has embraced us." If you "feel" distant from God just keep remembering these words. Say them out loud, write them everywhere. Nothing can separate you from the love of God in Christ Jesus.
