FREE! Session 5: THANKSGIVING: A RETHINK
Ponder, Action, Prayer, Challenge
In this ponder we are really thinking about thanksgiving, being thankful is in itself a rethink! Some of the rethinking that we contemplate in the main Free! Session 5 is concerning wrong thoughts we may have picked up about God. I am not delving into these today. Thanking Him throughout the day for whatever you can, is a great beginning to re-framing, renewing and transforming your thought life.
Read Galatians 5 v 16-25: So I say, walk by the Spirit, and you will not gratify the desires of the flesh. For the flesh desires what is contrary to the Spirit, and the Spirit what is contrary to the flesh. They are in conflict with each other, so that you are not to do whatever you want. But if you are led by the Spirit, you are not under the law.
The acts of the flesh are obvious: sexual immorality, impurity and debauchery; idolatry and witchcraft; hatred, discord, jealousy, fits of rage, selfish ambition, dissensions, factions and envy; drunkenness, orgies, and the like. I warn you, as I did before, that those who live like this will not inherit the kingdom of God.
But the fruit of the Spirit is love, joy, peace, forbearance, kindness, goodness, faithfulness, gentleness and self-control. Against such things there is no law. Those who belong to Christ Jesus have crucified the flesh with its passions and desires. Since we live by the Spirit, let us keep in step with the Spirit. Let us not become conceited, provoking and envying each other.
Read verses 19-23 again. Our behaviour, whether we walk in the Spirit or in the flesh, has much to do with our thought life. Which list most reflects your thought life at the moment? Do you see your addictive behaviour, or its roots, listed in vs 19-21? (middle paragraph above)
As you go into the next week, think about things for which you are thankful to God, and remember to thank him for them.
PRAY: both morning and evening
Lord Jesus, thank you for leading me to this group and helping me to find out about things I haven’t thought about before. Help me learn to have right thoughts about You. Help me not to live in the past, rather, with new thoughts to learn to be thankful in all things. In Christ’s name. Amen.
Read the Key Verse, Thessalonians 5:18 everyday this week. Memorise if you are able:
Give thanks in all circumstances; for this is God’s will for you in Christ Jesus.
Optional really significant task: Read James 1:2-4 everyday, this can be memorised too:
Consider it pure joy, my brothers and sisters, whenever you face trials of many kinds, because you know that the testing of your faith produces perseverance. Let perseverance finish its work so that you may be mature and complete, not lacking anything.
